Project Olympic sport: cross-country skiing
This is my word association drawing and the word I chose that I thought best described my sport was momentum. we were required to use only part of circles and lines on a grid. No two circles or lines could be in the same grid space but we were able to divide grid spaces into fourths if we needed to.
My word drawing represents cross-country skiing in many abstract ways.
The diagonal piece running through the center - I made the part symmetrical to represent that you have to do the same motions over and over again to gain speed/momentum
The upper left corner - To me this is like the start of the race which is very hectic, and as a cross-country skier you have to push through the crowd and use energy to get in front.
Targets - the targets represent a goal to pass the person in front of you. I am a cross-country runner and in each race i only focus on one person in front of me until im able to pass them and the the cycle continues; so the targets were mome symbolic to my experience but i figured other people probably did something similar

Olympic Pictogram Studies
I also studied the sport through the olympic 2022 pictogram and then came up with my own abstract a literal interpretations of the sport.
This helped me come up with the 3 plain model I eventually chose to be present in my final model

Drawings and Model
Out of the 3 original models, the one that best represented my sport was the right of the text box. I chose it because cross-country skiing is very linear in the way they move their bodys to gain momentum. The model is also very linear.
The two images below are my final Fibonacci model. The part in pink is the original model |
My completed model represents cross-country skiing in the way I elongated the length of the model, how it is gradually at an incline, and how most of the planes are facing the same direction. This abstractly shows the skis moving in the same direction all flowing the same path.

Projet 2: House of an olympian athlete
This project continues to progress with the idea of an architectural object that describes
a specific Winter Olympic sport—which in this case is a house. I was required to incorporate my Fibonacci Pavilion (as seen above in project 1). The project brief stated that i would "explore the design of a home that will allow an Olympian to live and train in an environment inspired by that sport." Again the sport I chose was cross-country skiing.

The idea i decided to move forward with best incorporated my original Fibonacci pavilion
ElevationsThe images on the right are my original elevation of how I thought my house would look from the outside and then the ones below are the final elevations done in Autocad
If you go back to project 1 you can easily compare these elevations to the original Fibonacci pavilion elevations. |

Why my house represents cross-country skiing
The white material represents concrete
the concrete represents the racers in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place spots because they stand out and in NH the white material will stand out
The wood and metal pieces represent all the other races-- they are still there but they aren't as noticed as much as the other racers
My house also has many different levels in elevation ( there are 4 ) but my house has just as much stairs as a 2 story house, they are just all spread out. The gain and decline in elevation show the landscape of cross country skiing. The path is never flat.
