Project 01: Artist Retreat
The purpose of this project was to design an artist retreat for an artistic client. The retreat has to relate to the client's art style and background. The artist I was given was a famous German artist by the name of Anselm Kiefer. Since Anselm Kiefer's art is known for his representation of the Holocaust and other German historical events, I decided to place his art retreat in Donaueschingen, Germany. This site is not a hugely populated city and has a lot of open forest and grasslands; which relates to a lot of the landscape paintings he portraits. The house I designed for my client is using his methodology of natural and discarded material; and demonstrates aspects of one of his artworks, the "Seven Heavenly Palace". Materials that will be applied in the house design is concrete, metal, and wood. Discarded materials will also be incorporate to the artist retreat to formulate an industrial urban like area.
Anselm Kiefer's art style conveys an ominous atmosphere through the use of dark and dull colors. In a lot of his works, he uses this idea of linear patterns to connect the audience to the piece. Anselm Kiefer is also recognized for his composition of various natural and discarded materials. I believed Anselm Kiefer's art is very simply but also has a sense of complexity. The "Varus" is a painting of a forest path at night, however there are various small details that display
Mixed Media
The main purpose of this multimedia piece was to represent Anselm Kiefer's "Seven Heavenly Palace" then branch out to his other artworks. I also wanted to represent a natural landscape, so I made a ground layer for the background. This symbolizes many of the landscapes displayed in his works and the use of his methodology. Through the multimedia piece, I was able to understand the application of organic shapes and placement to incorporate to the house designs.

Design Process
My approach to the artist retreat started with simple general ideas I got from researching Anselm Kiefer. I was getting a sense of industrial and naturalistic feels from a lot of his artworks, so I decided to sketch ideas in that context. The sketch, I chose, portrayed much like a Mexican pueblo. I then question, "What can I change to represent Anselm Kiefer's style?". So I incorporated a sense of separation in the space between the artist studio and the main living quarters. I eventually added elements of the "Seven Heavenly Palace" to the main house to fit his style and expand the space. Finally I arranged the buildings in the location to be sparsely spaced to provide a great use of outdoor space for him to utilize.
Final Design
The final product of the structure is a three story main living space with a guest quarters. The art studio is huge since Anselm Kiefer's works are in a large scale and he uses a lot of heavy equipment. The main hallways in the living space are made of glass; giving an illusion of separation and making it seem like two towers. The main living quarters are made of concrete and metal; patio and decks are made of wood.
Project 02: Global Makerspace
Global Culture 3D Print

Hybrid: (noun) a thing made by combining two different elements; a mixture.
In my 3D model, I utilized the different style of houses and created a new entity. This demonstrates the term "hybrid" by creating contrast in each aspect of the structure. In the initial start of modeling, I divided the base into four sections. One section was a quarter of a circle; another is a quarter if a hexagon; another is a quarter of a square, and another is a weird polygon. This connects to global culture because the architecture is not limited to one house style, but various types. Thus forming a whole new entity. |
Project Overview
The purpose of this project is to formulate a global makerspace that can be utilized by various people from different backgrounds. In this project, each group was given a continent to research and develop a makerspace design. Our goal was to develop a design a space that connects living to makespace and unites people in one area.
Initially, we were given the opportunity to choose specific members to work alongside for the project. I worked with Chris and Elizabeth to develop a global makerspace located in Asia. Chris a very abstract and creative person; he created the main design we used in the final product. Elizabeth is reliable and cooperative person; she did a majority of the production and assisted to various parts of the project. As for me, I'm very organized and take initiative in the work; I arranged the tasks and clear specific details. Our team composition is balanced since it specifies roles in the group and distributes the work evenly.

Individual Design (Initial Work)
At the start of the project, each group member was given the opportunity to create a general design for the entire maker space. I decided to formulate a design base of a koi fish pond. The central part of the maker space acts as the main component of creativity and technological work. The buildings around the outside are living quarters base off small Japanese townhouses. Finally, the outdoor space between the buildings and the maker space are the community areas. My goal with the design is to make the shape organic and input energy-efficient hardware.
After each member created a design, we had to design which one we would act as the main design for our project. My design was rejected due to the complexity of the curves. However, the outdoor community space of my design was implemented into the final work.
Choice and Development
The final choice we made was the brain concept from my group member Chris. The reason we chose his design was the fact that the idea was very universal and the concept was simple. Simplicity fitted with the basic Asian cultural ideals. Also, it promoted the idea of necessary isolation from the main working world.
The location we decided on for the structure was in Singapore on an isolated island where urbanization hasn't occurred. The main roads lead back to the city and it's close to a river. |

Final Project
The final product of the design was a concrete structure, divided into four main components. At the very center is the outdoor community space; this gives access to a public restroom facility and two greenhouses. Surrounding the community space is the maker space; this section is divided into various areas for work and projects. We also have a community kitchen located on the second floor of the building. Around the outside of the maker space are the individual villas for the clients. Each individual villa can accommodate up to two people but can be used for only one. Finally, the long arc hallway connected to the community space is the main bridge. The main bridge as the transition and the lobby for incoming clients. The villas, the main bridge, and the maker space are made of concrete to withstand the tropical elements in Singapore.
