Project 01: "Alison and Peter Smithson", Sugden House
Sept 18 1923 Peter Smithson is born in Durham, England June 22 1928 Alison Smithson is born in South Yorkshire, England 1949 The Smithsons get married 1953 They join Team X and revolt against old Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM) philosophies of high modernism. 1949-1954 The Smithsons finish building the Hunstanton School after winning a competition. This is their first project together. 1956 The couple build the Sugden House in Watford. This house is well known for its peculiar exterior shape. 1959-1965 They build the Economist, an English magzine, headquarters in London. 1968 They complete the Garden building in St. Hilda’s College in Oxford 1969-1972 They complete the Robin Hood Gardens in East London in order to push their agenda of stacked affordable housing which was an important part of Brutalism. 1973 Due to the very high crime rates and very poor construction, the publicly humiliated couple decided to make their talents private. 1988 One of the very few projects that was well known during their private stint were the buildings at the University of Bath which incliuded the Schools of Architecture and Engineering Aug 16 1993 Alison Smithson passes away Mar 3 2003 Peter Smithson dies |
