Filza Lalani: Architecture II
project 01: my dreams
The primary focus of project one revolves around me as the client. i faced a challenge to explore my underlying desires and necessities by creating a vision board and then converting those concepts into a floor plan. When I was creating the floor plan, one of the limitations that I encountered was the need to take into account the cost of living per square foot. The apartment had to undergo a custom design as it was intended for post-college life and needed to be within budget.
After creating a floor plan, the project shifted its attention towards tackling challenges and exploring the discovery of a new application known as Revit. Using Revit as a platform, I crafted my design while simultaneously concocting a floor plan complete with furniture arrangements for both a one-bedroom and two-bedroom layout. In addition, Revit aided me in creating a 3D camera view, enhancing my ability to visualize the space more effectively.

Research: Vision Board
To gain self-awareness, I devised a vision board showcasing my true identity. One section of my vision board was dedicated to my social life, while the other focused on my solitary life. One of the aspirations I have for my social endeavors is to help preserve food customs among my group of friends and, in addition, contribute to the welfare of those in need by creating sustainable public spaces. In the realm of solitude, I envision my life as an expedition of solitary exploration, accompanied solely by my artistic brushstrokes that vividly bring to life the landscapes I encounter. Furthermore, envision myself amassing a wide array of books from various genres within a vast library. To sum up, I've come to recognize the significance of maintaining a harmonious blend between my social engagements, moments of solitude, extending a helping hand to those in need, and exploring new destinations.
Apartment design
Once the vision board was completed, our next task was to assess how we could translate our dreams into a floor plan. Given that maintaining a harmonious equilibrium between my social and solitary life holds immense significance to me, I made a conscious choice to partition the floor plans into two sections. Consequently, the left section is dedicated to accommodating the kitchen and living room areas. The kitchen was intentionally designed to prioritize spaciousness, surpassing the living room in size. This choice stems from my strong commitment to upholding valuable traditions, where I frequently gather with friends to enjoy cooking together. Positioned towards the right side, the bathroom acts as a transitional space, gradually merging into the realm of my personal life, connecting both the bedroom and the kitchen. I consider the bedroom as the dominant area of the floor plan due to my belief that one's environment, particularly their personal space, has the potential to inspire and drive one toward the pursuit of their desires. The way I decorate my room reflects my true self and it should provide ultimate comfort within a living space. The balcony serves as an extension of the bedroom, offering a cozy spot where I can leisurely sit and enjoy a soothing book in the morning, accompanied by a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
After designing a floor plan for the one bedroom and bathroom, we were tasked to add a "roommate", or in other words add another room. this task challenged me to think about the use of space. In addition, we were also challenged to draw sections for our apartment design which challenged me to visualize the space around the apartment unit.

project 2: Aging out of the foster care system
The main emphasis of Project Two revolves around the issue concerning children reaching the age where they are no longer supported by the foster care system. The task presented to us was to create an apartment that addressed the problem of instability within this community. I needed to adhere to a specific set of guidelines while completing the given task. The criteria encompassed several requirements, including the presence of at least one outdoor area, a designated parking lot for residents, public access to shared spaces, apartment accommodations, a laundry facility, an office for managerial staff, mechanical rooms, and storage facilities. The primary focus of the project revolved around the concepts of solitude, community, comfort, and relaxation.
Research- Leaving the foster care systemChildren in the foster care system have already endured a harsh upbringing, and as they approach their departure from this system, the hurdles they face become even more formidable. In addition to starting to behave like adults, these children must also commence making independent financial choices. Consequently, only a small number of children opt for college and pursue a degree. These kids have come to realize that going to college may not be the best decision for their financial future. Their main focus now is on finding a stable job that can provide them with financial security.
The cycle of homelessness is perpetuated by aging out of the foster care system. Statistics indicate that a significant 20% of children who were once under foster care immediately find themselves without a home. This cycle further deepens with the struggles of unemployment and the emotional burden of depression. my research on kids aging out of the foster care system will be used to understand and solve issues |
Concept 01- Employment opportunities
I made it a key priority to generate fresh prospects for the individuals residing in this locality. Due to the usual difficulty in securing employment for this particular group, I believe that establishing a public commercial space can create job opportunities for individuals committed to earning an income. The commercial center boasts a charming café that serves as a wonderful avenue for residents to mingle with new acquaintances and develop deep and fulfilling friendships with their coworkers. The office area on the right side of the building is available for rent to a third party. This versatile area can serve as a venue for parties, meetings, and many other purposes. I aspired to ensure that the revenue being accumulated would directly benefit foster kids by offering them financial counselors, enhancing their entertainment options, and ultimately providing them with free housing.
Concept 02
Concept two places a keen emphasis on tranquility. Upon arrival, residents will be warmly greeted and required to check in as part of the safety measures. There are also two sections for mail included in the check-in process. I strongly believe that residents who age out of the foster care system and lack a permanent address for mail delivery would greatly benefit from a resident-friendly mail system that enables them to receive products through the mail. Upon passing the check-in process, residents will find a dining area located on the first floor where they can enjoy their meals. In my opinion, the dining table has the potential to function as a central gathering point for residents, offering an opportunity for individuals to come together, share their stories, and potentially forge new friendships. To the left, there exists a library wherein individuals can engage in studying activities. This library is equipped with versatile flex rooms that serve multiple purposes. Lastly, on the second floor, you will find various apartment units along with a conveniently located small bar, serving as a delightful snack area.
Concept 03- Comfortability
Comfortability was the main focus of concept three. The absence of a commercial area renders the first floor primarily dedicated to residential living. The structure will be enveloped by lush greenery, encompassing a tranquil garden within its premises. Having a garden seems advantageous since it provides an opportunity to educate children on the art of planting flowers. The focal point of the second floor revolves around the concept of unity. The space boasts numerous amenities, consisting of a pool table for engaging recreation, a media room for indulgent movie-watching experiences, a flex room to cater to diverse needs and an island bar that invites residents to concoct their own drinks and enjoy the company of friends. Concept three stands out from the other two concepts due to the presence of a second floor that seamlessly leads to a spacious balcony. This outdoor haven boasts a convenient grill and an abundance of comfortable seating options. The aim of concept three was to foster a sense of comfort in the community by uniting individuals through their common interests and hobbies. The third floor, at last, serves as a designated study area. This particular floor is designated for individuals who take pleasure in working in tranquility and wish to make progress in their reading materials.
Final design
For my final design, I incorporated the best ideas of my initial concepts into a final model. For example, many of the shared social spaces like the bar, library, and garden were incorporated into the final. In addition, the check-in and mailbox system design was added to my final floor plan to enhance the security in this building. Finally, the idea of a shared social balcony area for the residence is used as a primary pool and garden area for the final model. Additionally a volleyball court, theater, meditation center, pool, and courtyard were new additions to the design which best enhanced the target comfortability.
