Project 01: Fibonacci Cube

This project is built off of two things, the Fibonacci Cube, and an element. The Fibonacci Cube uses different sized rectangles to make up a building. We had to use those shapes to make a building that also simulates an element. The project consists on models and drawings that show our Ideas about this project. We then presented our project to real architects to see their opinions of our work.

Element Research

I chose earth as my element because most buildings are made out of materials found naturally in the earth. Almost every modern building has a frame made out of metal, and metal is found in caves, so I decided to base my project on a cave. I wanted my model to simulate stalagmites and stalactites, and other recognizable parts of a cave.

The main thing I wanted to do with my model was to integrate recognizable parts of a cave. The raised part is supported by vertical planes that are like stalagmites and stalactites, portruding from the ground and ceiling. The space at the bottom simulates parts of a cave where you would have to crawl under, bringing yourself closer to the earth.

With my final model, I wanted to make more tight spaces. I built a ceiling and other planes to simulate the interior of a cave. The support
planes made it look more natural, and made sure the model didn't fall apart.

Project 02: UN-plug Cabin

Project Element: Water

Project Biome: Desert

The Desert and water are opposite of each other, creating an interesting challenge for this project. Deserts don't have much water or rain, making it hard for people to live there. The cabin couldn't have running water or air conditioning, so I had to make sure it wasn't too hot. The combination of the desert and water was a fun challenge for me to work out.

Research

I looked for deserts in the United States, and found the Sonoran Desert. It was the perfect place for the cabin, because it has rivers and aquafers that could provide water. You can also grow plants to eat, and this combined with a well was my central idea for this project. The Sonoran Desert is still very hard to live in, but plants and animals have adapted to live there. Plants have longer roots to access water underground, and a well would provide water for the people living in the cabin. A nearby river would allow people to cool off, swim, and catch fish. With a garden and a river providing food, a well providing water, and the shelter of the cabin, people could have their own self-sustaining environment.
