Project 1: Rural Farmhouse

I was tasked to "modernize" a old farmhouse into a house that will be able to sustain a 21st Century family. We could alter the building in any way with the goal of still respecting the original house. The client gave us a list of the necessities for the new house.

Existing House - Saddlebag

The saddlebag house was a very popular choice for early rural homes. It was most commonly an extension to a basic one room house by taking down a wall and adding basically another one room house with a chimney separating them.

Design Development

From the beginning I knew that I wanted to respect the original house as much as I could while still making it modern and usable. I decided to add extensions to the sides of the house while keeping the saddlebag as the main entrance to pull focus toward the original house. Further along the design I added a garage to even both sides out to look more appealing.

Final Drawings and Model

When I started my final drawings i was still making changes like adding more square footage to the master bedroom and bath. I printed the original floor plan and elevations I made in AutoCad and drew the extensions by drafting. The study model was a challenge but it conveys the overall idea of the house well.
