Fallujah is a city located in south-central Iraq that was taken over by ISIS forces and was later liberated in June 2016. Some key features of Fallujah include the railroad, river, and highway which serve as borders of the city. In addition, distribution of space within the city is organized by districts. Most of the social and market areas in Fallujah are located in the north section of the city (which is much more affluent) along the main road that is highlighted below by the blue line passing through the city. Residential areas with homes and industrial areas with factories are located in the southern part of the city (below the main road).
Refugee Site Design Concepts
We came up with many ideas for the refugee camp layout. Our first idea was a radial layout were we could organize the city in a way that provided a sense of uneven distribution like the city of Fallujah (Picture 1). We implemented a river as one of the natural boundaries that shaped the city into our refugee camp.
