You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.

The goal of this semester is to explore the world of architecture through the concept of ecology. Coursework this semester will focus on the relationship between architecture and the environment. Projects and exercises will promote and teach the creation of design that is meaningful for those who use it and responsive to the place where it exists. Through these projects, we will have the opportunity to understand connections between how we design and the effects it has on the world around us.
Across three of our studios, students will navigate the Anthropocene, exploring a variety of scenarios and problems to develop architecture operating across the divide, bringing people together with the world around them in new and innovative ways.

- How can a house be a unique reflection of a specific generation?
- How does a house reflect the Millennial interest and concern for sustainability and ecological responsibility?
LISD Outdoor Learning Area Signage
One project currently under development as part of the school district's current bond package is a new environmental learning facility. Established by a land grant from the US Department of Education, the property provides opportunities for elementary students to interact with the natural world and learn about environmental systems and issues. To complement and enhance the design of the new facility, second year architecture students at TECC|East were enlisted to design signage and wayfinding systems for the site and areas around the building.

Landscape Monitoring Station
Across the world, scientists are actively monitoring and measuring a variety of sensitive and threatened landscapes. In many cases, successful monitoring requires scientists to occupy the landscape for extended periods and conduct work with the right equipment. Students will design a facility that allows this to happen. These projects will be designed for scientists actively working in a specific project landscape chosen by the student. Students will work to understand the specific actions of scientists and their areas of study to permit efficient and effective work/research. The design of these landscape monitoring station should be inspired by and reflect the landscape and the work scientists are doing to monitor it. The final objective is a building adapted to the characteristics of the landscape, reflecting the work going on inside, and helping scientists observe, understand, and preserve sensitive or changing environments. |

Practicum Studio EcoProjects
Students in our Practicum Studio were given the opportunity to develop individual projects that addressed a specific ecological issue. Focusing on a project type and issue that was personally inspiring or engaging, each student was able to develop their own custom design in response to the problems they developed.
You can find our Practicum student projects at the links below:
