Practicum 2 Project
For my final architecture class in high school I wanted to incorporate everything I have learned so far into one last big project. From my first project that was centered on creating tiny houses; to my second which focused on creating modular ones. I wanted to wrap up everything I learned so far and show it In a singular project.
I am designing a fully modular and sustainable prefabricated house that can operate fully off the grid. Overall this project encompasses every previous project I have worked on. I plan to use this as a staple piece to show my experience in Mr.Carson's architecture class. |

Project Brief - Sustainable 'A' Frame |
Research Phase
|
Before I can start working on my ideas and getting them onto paper, I needed to do some research so I have a better understanding on the topics that I am basing my project over. So I started by outlining other possibly options of projects that I could work on, but in the end I stayed picked the modular housing route.
Then I looked into everything I want to accomplish with my project. Then I started researching what I would actually need to make this house self-sustainable. From that I looked into all the different types of utilities I needed. I also researched different types of materials and certain things to remember with each material or sustainable utility I wanted to add. To see all my research, the PDF file is below. |

Concept Phase & Basic Designs
Before even creating my project brief and starting my research I had this idea in my head of what I wanted my project to look like. This was not the best thing to do as It had me primarily focused on one idea without looking at others.
This idea was to make many different rectangle like shapes with curved edges to give off a modern look. Although I liked the look of this deign it did not fit the project / House I wanted to create. So I stopped working on that design to look at my other options. In doing this I found a design that is a much better fit to my final project. This is an 'A Frame' design, it is much easier to fit in the required utilities and systems I need into the 'A Frame' than the previous design. Upon finding this I decided to move forward with the 'A Frame' design instead of my previous modern look. |

After getting some basic sketches done, I then moved to my sketch book to get down more detailed designs that were the stepping stone to what I produced later on in REVIT.
I went back and forth from parchment paper to sketch up after I decided to look back and change to the 'A frame' design. In my sketchbook I focused on the different modular options for each design. Overall in my sketchbook I created elevations, floor plans, roof, and section concept views for my two designs I focused on. |
Before finishing up my concept phase I wanted to create some study models to get my designs onto a 3D scale, so I can better rationalize how they look.
The scale of both models are 1/4th. The models show the basic 'A Frame' that I want to create as well as one with some extra module add-ons I want to incorporate into my project. Overall I want customization to be a major focus on this project, with a multitude of options for people to pick from to create their own home. |

Revit First Drafts & Halfway Presentation
|
After I finished sketching and creating study models, I went on to further my project in Revit. Last year I got a beginners understanding of Revit, but I really didn't know much. My first attempts at Revit were a proof of concept for my designs as well as me trying to re-learn Revit.
After about a week of trying to re-learn Revit I had my halfway presentation to a jury. Overall the jury gave me good constructive criticism on what I should put more focus on as I move forward in the project. Now after the presentation I move forward to finishing my designs and getting ready for the end of project presentation in May. |
