Mischa Gonzalez: Architectural Design I
01: Backyard Cottage
Within the classes first year, we had to make a back yard cottage for a competition. A backyard cottage is a small home within someone's residence, more likely a backyard. This backyard cottage was made for a glassblower, who might live by themselves. You'll be able to see how the idea started and grew into the final design at the end. By first starting with 6 ideas, or concept, with models. Then picking one idea we enjoyed the most to make it professional. This website will only show 4 concept ideas that allowed me to get to my finale design, meaning 5 ideas in total.
Research
Research, or the gathering of ideas was one the first things to do. By picking out ideas or designs we found interesting or useful. From elevation designs to storage ideas, even residential regulations. These ideas are supposed to be wide spread, some might not even be useful, but they were a set of ideas that can could be looked back at for our concepts.
As you can see this website called :Padlet, was a place holder for these ideas. Where I collected pictures of housing I found fascinating or even interesting. Along with storage ideas, since backyard cottages were meant to be small. Including ideas for interior and ways to make a house eco friendly.

Some concept designs
Concept 1
Concept one is a jumble of chip board pieces to make a somewhat house shaped designs. Where it soon came out as a semi L shaped house with a wonky roof. the squiggle lines were supposed to be area where glass would be. The constant wonky shapes and sides were meant to show unique properties of glass. How you can shape it into any size and shape, yet it will always work to make some sort of masterpiece. |
Concept 2
This was the first idea for the project, a simple design that resembled a humble home. Where we used materials to make a good enough model(at least capable of standing on its own). Since this was the first idea I had in mind of the comfort for the craftsman. Giving them space for work, relaxation and living. Making sure this home was flexible with a garage. Where the walls could be folded up and down for any season and weather. |
Concept 3
In this design it brought up the child like wonder of a person with the mix of glass products. Using a grid on card board to follow. Making an open model that could make any design. As you can see this concept brought up characteristics of a child. Having the a similar shape but still having properties of a house. But also demonstrating the craftsman profession. The bubbly section meant to show how glass can be bubbly and bumpy. Along with the designs of beads on each pole to show the job of glass bead making. |
Concept designs of the chosen one
This concept was the chosen one out of all of the ideas. Where it first started out as a LEGO model with no roofing and many added characteristics. The slide show underneath shows in order on how I managed to developed the final drafts and drawings. Where at first it was meant to be sleek and white for a refined and classy look. Having glass bricks and tiles onto the wall with a possible glass line that wraps around. However that idea was soon scraped and it soon began to take more unique look. Having concrete walls with an artistic design of glass(possibly glass bottles) to represent the designs glass could have being stretched. Being carved from the inside for rooms and closets. Where the front door would show the front of a furnace, like walking into one. A final part would be solved by corrugated aluminum roofs to protect the house.
The chosen ones final design
The Final design would show all the parts being put together. Making a well drawn plan that could be read by other architects. Each following a 1/4 scale, except the site, having a scale of 1/8.
Here is the model made for the finished idea, set onto the side it was meant to be on.

02:Bridge house WOW!
A second project was needed to be done, where we had to make a home at the site called the Old Alton Bridge. The house could be on or around the bridge, so long as it stayed in a relative area of the site. The photo below is a front picture of the old bridge, the same part you'd have to walk through first. Old Alton bridge was covered in spiders, holes, and graffiti, mostly due its old age and tale. Which was about some man who was killed and maybe hanged on the bridge, where now his body haunts the spot as the goat man.
Knowledge: Site Analysis and Site model
While ideas were being made, a site analysis and a model was in its formation. A site analysis is a drawing that shows factors of the site you are about to work on. Such as sound, smells, weather, wind, tempt, trees, sun path, and way more about the site. The picture on the left is one of the many site analysis that was made. Site analysis can very with person to person, and can even have a variety of color. Ours explained the environment of the site where the Old Dalton Bridge was. With sun path, sound of the cars, river flow, wind, trees, some even had ways to show the bridge was a bridge.
A site model is a bit different, instead of telling info or being made of paper. It lacks color and focuses more on materials to replicate the site we are working on. Using things like cardboard, wood, museum board, chip board. That way the final model could be fit onto the site model to get a rough idea on how it interacts with the site.

Just Some concept designs
Idea 1:toiletIdea 1 was meant to be a simple and thin house. Made out of concrete or having a layer of plaster. The roof is curved to prevent flooding, with two metal ramps on the sides to go around. The first floor had a big work area next to the front door. Which mostly is made of glass and preferably the sliding kind. right after that is the kitchen one side, followed by the living room. while the other side had a simple bedroom and a bathroom. right on the second floor, there is a balcony that is connected to a room which also has bathroom in a corner.
|
Idea 2:scienceIdea 2 was supposed yo be more more modern, with a white sleek look. being right under the bridge, curving at the ends. Where each person will have there own room and kitchen and whatever is deemed necessary. While the middle has a hallway in case they want to interact with one another, or deal with plants that are neatly set on the sides. That's why there are holes on the side so that rain can enter an exit if needed.
|
Idea 3:stairsIdea 3 was just a bunch of stairs upon stairs, upon stairs. Where it would be two stairs against each other to make a hill so you can walk over it. The ceilings perfectly fit the shape, and the door opens up to the living room. With a room nearby and a stairs which go up to the second room and bathroom. Right under those stairs is the kitchen. The top room is accessible on the stairs outside.

And dont forget the models
Idea 1 model, wowMuseum board and glue, with drawn windows and doors.
|
Idea 2 model, OMGMuseum board and glue, with drawn windows and doors? Yes, trapdoors.
|
Idea 3 model, OH!Museum board ad Chipboard, wow. Glued and used for an idea.

But LOOK, Its our chosen one
The idea that won the award for being the most likely to be a good idea, was this one. Which is a house that is meant to look like the bridge. Having engineered wood on the sides to mimic that wood texture, along with slanted walls to get that angle in. The windows went through a rough spot, being changed while on autocad. That way it represent the vast graphitti on the bridge, but still having its flare of uniqueness. With a ramp that goes over the bridge so that it can people can still use it. The ceiling was made with triangles that go upward so that rain can trickle down and away. There is a door in the front that has a painting of a fake door, but it is much bigger than the painting. Once you go in, you've met the kitchen an a small pantry. Followed by a small living room and bedrooms that neatly snug a triangular bathroom. Once you get past the rooms and there small closets, you'll reach the work space that has a small door to the back.
Chosen one in Autocad?
In case non of you guys know, autocad in an app of sorts used by many workers. here you can us lines and numbers to make ideas for homes and objects. almost like 3D modeling but with lines the majority of the time. Please keep in mind that the floor plan is the top picture while the elevations re on the bottom. With the windows being shadowed with grey, and humans as representation for scale.
