Maryam Malik: Architectural Design I
Backyard Cottage, a small accessary dwelling unit separate from the main house. The unit can be used in many different ways and spaces. Guest, rental, or studio, it is not limited to one purpose. Specifically, for this project, craft played a huge role in the designing and structure of the built. More specifically, the plan presented today stems from the craft of a leatherworker. This made it to which the ADU was carefully planned and structured to fit those conditions most suitable to leatherworkers. Different ideas and specific concepts were explored to prioritize the interest of leatherworkers, including both materials and layouts. Overall, the development of ideas specific to the craft of a leatherworker, such as wood, space, and light, was explored and expanded to create a suitable ADU.
Craft Investigation
What is craft? This question was crucial when researching about backyard cottages. It helped to create a balance between design, structure, and the addition of a personal touch. Addressing issues such as sustainability and functionality in the investigation head on allowed for a better understanding of the accessory dwelling unit. Overall, a major takeaway that came from the research was the incorporation of leatherworker craft techniques into the structure of the building, such as the addition of an accent stone wall.
Concept Design
A lot of research went in to figuring out the needs of leatherworkers and how they conduct business. It was crucial to create different ways to arrange the space that would help the leatherworkers do their craft while also making sure they’re comfortable during long hours of work. Focuses on things like natural light, easy access to tools, and keeping a good balance between work and home were very important. After brainstorming some ideas, the unique lifestyle of leatherworkers was incorporated into the space.
Concept 01 - In this design idea, the goal was to create a space that a leatherworker could use both comfortably and actively. One of the most crucial aspects of working with leather and tools is having the perfect lighting to achieve desirable outcomes. To address this need, a skylight was crafted on the right side of the room, providing natural light that enhances the workspace. The design thoughtfully combines comfort and functionality, offering an ideal setting for creativity and craftsmanship when working.
Concept 02 - Imagine a leather worker constantly immersed in the craft, juggling various tools and materials while moving in and out of buildings. The ideal space for this craftsmen would be a dedicated workshop, designed specifically for the task at hand. This concept features a workshop that allows easy entry from the main house as well as access to a separate workspace. Overall, this design not only provides the leather worker with privacy but also a well-suited environment for creativity, further enhancing the craft.
Concept 03 - Leatherworkers are constantly moving between crafting different tasks. In these intervals, like any human, a leatherworker might want to eat or rest. That is why a plan was created to which the workspace connects to the living and kitchen area, fulfilling personal needs, while remaining separate from the bedroom. This ensures work and personal life do not clash. Overall, this design aims to create a space for leatherworkers to feel free to move around without feeling confined to one space.

Design Concept 03 was chosen, as it not only created a perfect balance between the functional needs of leatherworkers and their personal lifestyle, but also created an open natural light space for productivity. This concept implements structural design elements from each concept perfectly. Leatherworks can easily come in and out, and access different materials used in their everyday lives easily. Overall, it provides a space for leatherworkers to flexibility exercise their craft while also meeting basic living conditions.
Final Design
Imagine stepping through double glass doors that greet any visitor with an inviting welcome. Upon entering, you’re met with a spacious living room connected to a cozy kitchen. To your left, the bedroom is nestled just beyond the entrance, with the bathroom conveniently nearby and a closet for storage.Turning right from the front entrance, an expansive workspace unfolds before your eyes, accompanied by a handy storage room. Flooded with light from large sliding glass doors, this area creates a vibrant atmosphere, leading you back to the home's exterior. Yes, there are two entrances that meet at a lovely garden in the front—perfect for sitting or working. Features like an accent wall offer privacy from the main house, so you can be most comfortable in the garden. The design allows the leatherworkers to distinguish between the two environments of work and home while also facilitating indoor-outdoor work as the sliding glass doors easily open to the garden. Not only do these doors enhance the open feel of the space, but they also accommodate larger materials that wouldn’t fit through standard doors. The generous windows fill the interior with natural light, crucial for leatherworkers who rely on fine detail in their craft. Additionally, the house’s wooden accents mirror the materials used in their daily work, while a striking stone accent wall adds character. Overall, this house creates an environment for leatherworkers to thrive in their craft.
Project 2: Craftsman Residence
In this project, the focus was on designing a unique residence for a guest craftsman. The site is near the historic Old Alton Bridge. The aim was to explore the relationship between craft and architecture. By studying the characteristics and qualities of craft, the design sought to create meaningful spaces of the bridge while accommodating the needs of the craftsman. The process involved an investigation into materials, historical significance of the bridge, and the natural surroundings. This exploration was not just about creating a living space, but also about making a connection between the craftsman and the bridge through design and consideration of the landscape.
Craft & Bridge Research
The investigation into the Old Alton Bridge and the craftsman residence began with a visit to the historic site. Observing the bridge's unique design and its connection to local legends created questions about preserving its huge historical ties. This exploration led to an understanding of how the characteristics of craft can influence these elements. It emphasized the importance of creating meaningful additions into the living space for the client and guest craftsman.

Concept Design
In developing three concept designs for the craftsman residence, it began with a brainstorming session focused on the characteristics of craft and how they can influence the bridges structure. Research was conducted on different crafts and how they relate to the forest like environment and the structure of the bridge. The designs were created to explore various ideas between the unique indoor and outdoor space. The goal was to create designs that not only represent the craft, but also provide a meaningful living experience for the client and guest, while ensuring they fit with the site of the historic Old Alton Bridge.
Concept 01 - This design focuses on creating an inviting environment with a spacious greeting area.
