LUISA SALAZAR
overview: The focus of this section of the project brief was to flesh out the buildings on site in a way that showed craft and encouraged sustainability.
Concept one - Rooted in the functionality of the materials and feel, being more industrial
- The focus of using materials that represent the crafts, such as wood for woodworking, a series of windows for glassblowing - Taking inspiration from the ideas and themes in the foundation of other crafts such as diagonal and curving roofs to represent clayworking, and the decisive structure usually found within culinary spaces. |
concept 2- Rooted in organic structures to show the human hand within the mastering of crafts
- heavily focused on direct mirroring of the crafts being focused on - large focus on sustainability and using the environment around it to inspire the design. |
concept 3- inspired by the concept of turning source material into something more advanced.
- uses the movement of glass pulling to redirect aspects to different and alternating directions. - creates a water system that redirects water to prevent flooding. |
COMMUNITY CENTER
|
|
OVERVIEW
The community center is a joint area between the residents workshops and a public education center. The area is composed of rooms built specifically for the four crafts being focused on; woodworking, glassblowing, clayworks/pottery, and culinary. Then the center circle is the general public education space with a multipurpose classroom. The roof is a garden area that is completely walkable, having a series of plants, and fruits and vegetables that can be later used for culinary or sold at the farmers market.
DESIGN
The design of this building is based on the crafts being showcased within it as well as the surrounding environment. The shape of the building is taken from the concept of carving or molding away from what would normally be a regular block of wood or clay and turning it into something more interesting. what could've been just a simple circle and even height, through "carving away" becomes a space that uses different heights, shapes, and forms, to its advantage. Then, the wooden pillars are based on the trees covering the site that this building is on, and also mimics the designs often used in woodworking of creating lines down the sides of the wood. Then, the roof provides a way to blend into the surrounding environment as well. The glassblowing comes into play with the design with the aspects of landscaping, specifically the ground patio and walkway, which mimics the pulling of glass during glassblowing. Then, through the garden feature covering the roof of the building, there is an emphasis on the craft of culinary by having the building showcase the root of where culinary comes from. The roof also ties into the environment around it by reflecting the green pastures naturally growing throughout the site. This creates a sustainable space by contributing to the natural environment and fostering a series of plants in the space. the pillars also act as a water system, with one in five pillars connecting the water that collects on the roof and is not taken in by the soil and puts it back into its building as a natural water source.
FARMERS MARKET
|
|
OVERVIEW
The farmers market is a space where produce, projects created in the workshops, outside of site craftsmen creations, and food to be sold. The triangular area acts as an air conditioned space to sell produce that may require protection from the heat or sun. then the open area is space to set up stands. then there is a space that mimics a food court, with several tables. The wooden pillars reaching over the road serve to connect the food trucks that would be placed there into the overall structure, promoting unity.
DESIGN
The design of this building is based on the crafts being showcased within it as well as the surrounding environment. The roof of this building is heavily inspired by the overall similar theme of abstract formations and curving more organic looking features reflected throughout the four crafts; woodworking, clayworking, glassblowing, and culinary. It was inspired by the curving of clay work, the pulling of glass blowing, and the carving out of woodworking. Then it is connected to the more concrete section of the building, the enclosed triangular part covered in lined pillars thats design purpose is to connect the rest of the building to the roots of the land, which is where all the elements of the crafts come from. This concept is again seen with the pillars arching over the road and down to the ground. Lastly the pillars, again mirroring the trees come back into play. Beyond that, the concept plays into the idea of sustainability because it, through the natural curving of the roof, is able to collect rainwater which would then be taken underneath connecting to the bathrooms, then underground to be repurposed towards the residency areas and to limit the flooding of this area.
