How can Woodcarving Inspire Playful and Functional Spaces?
My client is a woodcarver, a woodcarver uses wood as a primary material for its unique texture and appearance. I was inspired by the playful nature of a treehouse and so I wanted to incorporate that idea into my concept. As for materials, my designs has a combination of wood siding and functional spaces that is accessible to the clients needs.
PROJECT 01
BACKYARD COTTAGE
My First Designs
Concept 1:
In this design, I aimed to emulate a log with a rounded top, achieving a unique aesthetic that reflects organic forms in nature. The challenge of working with circular elements led to a tight but efficient layout. The space is designed to maximize functionality while maintaining visual appeal. I incorporated open areas to encourage natural light, enhancing the overall ambiance. Despite the spatial constraints, the arrangement facilitates a cozy environment that promotes creativity and comfort. The design enables a harmonious flow between the different areas, making it ideal for work and relaxation. |
Concept 2:
|
This model leans into log cabin inspiration while focusing on easy movement. The layout is designed for seamless navigation, allowing users to transition effortlessly between spaces. And on the elevation, the additional space is used as a garage (not included in floor plan or model). While it effectively addresses convenience, the design leans toward an overly simplistic interpretation of a log house, which may not fully capture the depth and complexity I envision. Adding more textures and materials could enhance the depth and character, balancing the log concept without being too obvious. |
Concept 3:
In this concept, I explored the idea of a log-based workspace with a strategically placed bathroom above for improved accessibility. This layout seeks to enhance daily functionality by situating the bathroom close to the main working area. The living space occupies the upper floor and is characterized by a square layout that provides a sense of openness. However, the size difference between the two areas might be awkward. This design aims to strike a balance between work and living environments, ensuring that both areas are accessible and functional for daily activities. |
|
Final Concept:
This initial model is crucial for the final design. Inspired by treehouses, each part is distinct yet interconnected. Comfort and workspaces are on the first floor for easy access, helping transition from work to relaxation, although having only one bathroom downstairs can be inconvenient.
Bigger windows added in the front of the upstairs space are purposed to let in more light and strengthen the connection to the outdoors.
Overall, this first model reflects the client's needs while laying the groundwork for a polished design later. It mixes comfort, accessibility, and a cool aesthetic, making it a key part of the architectural journey.

Final Model
I stuck with the treehouse concept since gives a sense of adventure and connection to nature, which I tried to capture in my cottage design. Having wood siding reflects the client's profession and natural environment creating an inviting atmosphere. I incorporated different shapes together, like how each roof is different from another to give each space its own individuality yet all together, they complement each other and incorporate a sense of harmony.
Design Breakdown
In this separate space, I designed this layout for the kitchen and the living room. This provides a space for relaxation and dining, this also has access to a bathroom for more convenience. I used a log to hold up the building and a railing throughout the front and the stairs to give a more direct treehouse reference.
This building is dedicated as a workshop space for the client. I chose a cylinder-like shape in reference to a wooden log. I put windows throughout the building to bring in some natural lighting to inspire creativity. However, now I’m thinking that I should’ve made a more open space, like having higher windows.
In the main building, I designed a cohesive layout that groups the more private spaces together, prioritizing the client’s comfort and convenience. This includes a spacious bedroom that serves as a peaceful retreat, a bathroom for relaxation, and a functional closet for storage. To support productivity, I incorporated a dedicated work desk where the client can focus on planning and creativity. And lastly, a thoughtfully placed display case in front of the bed not only showcases cherished items but also adds a personal touch to the space, making it both functional and inviting.
How Does This Fit In The Site?
This design really shines in its assigned location. The backyard features a collection of shapes that flow together, blending the built environment with the natural surroundings. This integration not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also encourages outdoor activities and relaxation. The design takes advantage of the site's natural features, such as trees and existing topography, to create inviting outdoor spaces. This project demonstrates a strong commitment to site responsiveness, showcasing how architecture can enhance both functionality and beauty within its context. The cottage isn’t just a building; it’s a part of the landscape, offering a unique living experience that embraces both comfort and nature. |
PROJECT 02:
MASTERCRAFTSMAN HOUSE
For this project, a 'Master Craftsman House' is needed to compliment out previous 'Backyard Cottage'
CONCEPT DESIGNS
|
In this design, I wanted to emphasize the curves and rounded shapes, so I made the layers similar in form to create a cohesive look. The model features open spaces between the layers, which I plan to fill with glass to allow natural light to enter the space. This will help create a brighter, more open environment, while also maintaining the flow of the design. The use of glass will provide a visual contrast and help connect the interior with the exterior, enhancing the overall atmosphere. |
In this design, I focused on avoiding curves and sharp edges, which was a shift from my previous approach. For this version, I decided to extend the top layer outward to create a floating roof over the first floor. This feature not only adds a sense of depth and separation between the levels but also provides additional shelter and shade for the lower floor. |

|
In this design, I returned to using rounded forms, incorporating a slanted cut on the side as a reference to the process of chopping wood. I also reintroduced the cylindrical workspace, which creates a unique focal point. Additionally, I considered adding a waterfall along the edge of the cylinder, as a way to connect the structure to nature, drawing inspiration from the tranquil environment of a rainforest. |
In this design, I retained the cylindrical-shaped workspace inspired by the backyard cottage. I incorporated curved sides on the building to evoke the idea of carving, while the sharp edges are a reference to the process of chopping wood. These contrasting elements aim to balance organic, fluid shapes with more defined, angular features, creating a dynamic yet cohesive design. |

FINAL CONCEPT
For the first floor, I designed an open layout to create a sense of spaciousness and connectivity throughout the space. The workspace remains within the master craftsman house, though it’s not shown in the drawing. I adjusted the sliding doors to the right to allow for more direct access from the backyard cottage. To encourage a natural flow, I grouped the more social areas, the living room, kitchen, and dining room, together, ensuring the space feels open, inviting, and perfect for gathering. |
For the second floor, I envisioned it as a private retreat for the master craftsman, where work and relaxation can coexist in harmony. The workspace is strategically placed to take advantage of natural light, and I plan to incorporate picture windows to bring in even more light, enhancing the spacious, modern feel of the space. The lofted net floor creates a flexible area for reading, relaxing, or hosting social gatherings. A long balcony extends outdoors, offering a secluded escape from the rest of the house. I’m also considering adding an indoor garden to fill the large gap in front of the stairs, which would bring a touch of nature inside. Additionally, I plan to include a closet in the master suite to ensure it’s both functional and comfortable.
|
The third floor is designed as the ultimate private retreat, prioritizing comfort and relaxation. At the heart of this space is the greenhouse, surrounded by large windows that allow natural light to flood in, creating a deep connection to nature. I’ve also included a chill space for activities like meditation, reading, or simply unwinding amidst the plants. For entertainment, there’s a dedicated home theater, offering a private cinematic experience. Additionally, I added a fully equipped kitchen with a bar area, providing a convenient place to eat and socialize. To enhance efficiency, a restroom is integrated into the space for added convenience. Given the unique shape of this floor, I’m also considering adding roof access to utilize the surrounding empty spaces, potentially creating an outdoor area or additional functional space. |
The elevation plans reflect the layered design approach across all three floors, emphasizing both functionality and aesthetic harmony. The first floor features an open layout with a clear connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, with large windows that allow for natural light to flow through. The second floor maintains a sense of privacy, with carefully placed openings that balance light and seclusion for the master craftsman’s retreat. On the third floor, the design prioritizes relaxation, with expansive glazing around the greenhouse to maximize natural light and enhance the connection to nature. The varied heights and setbacks across the elevations not only create visual interest but also provide opportunities for outdoor spaces, like the long balcony and potential roof access, offering further integration with the surrounding environment. The overall composition of the elevations reflects the flow and intent of each floor, bringing together open, private, and calming spaces in a cohesive, modern design.
This aerial view of the site showcases the unique, organic shape of the main house, highlighting its distinct design. The building's individuality is emphasized through the use of different colored markers, each representing a specific material, which helps illustrate the contrast and interaction between the various elements. Surrounding the structure, the site features expansive grassy areas and paved pathways that provide clear circulation and guide visitors through the space. The layout is carefully planned to ensure a natural flow between the indoor and outdoor areas, creating a seamless connection with the surrounding environment. The overall design fosters a comforting, welcoming atmosphere, blending the building’s architectural forms with its outdoor elements for a cohesive, harmonious setting. |

Including the backyard cottage, I mostly stuck with my original design but made a few changes to improve the overall space. I updated the floor plan to make the layout more open and functional, giving the rooms a better flow. One of the main changes I made was with the columns holding up the second building. I repositioned them to give the whole structure a sleeker, more modern look, and to make sure there was no wasted space underneath. This not only made the design look cleaner but also made the space below more usable. Overall, the changes help the design feel more open and practical without losing the original vibe.
With the site plan, the home’s unique organic shape is inspired by the fluidity of wood carving, reflecting the client’s craft. Different colors are used to represent the various materials, highlighting the contrast and texture in the design. The layout is designed to flow naturally, with grassy areas and paved pathways that guide movement through the space, seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor environments. This creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that supports both work and daily living, fostering a sense of harmony and continuity.
