Starting the Semester:
Interpretation of CRAEFT
In this poster I was given the Architect group, Rural Studio.I used some of their work to interpret how they use craeft, through hands on projects and experiences they have managed to build a community of affordable and sustainable houses for a less fortunate town. Rural Studio is a Community based and building organization.
|
For this poster we were supposed to interpret how we saw CRAEFT in a bigger picture outside of architecture. So I crafted a collage of different newspaper clippings, taking separate things that usually wouldn't work well together and crafting a unifying landscape. My interpretation of CRAEFT was a painting but then thinking outside the "box" (the frame of the painting) and using my imagination to craft beyond the basics of the painting.

PROJECT 01:
APPRENTICE ADU
Concept 01For this concept I wanted to implement a less modern look, with a more earthly and down to earth exterior. The way I showed my craft in this concept was through the tear drop or “Bead like” workspace that you can see on the right.Throughout this concept there are circular windows to further expand this idea.I thought the best way to craft my concept model was by using clay to curve some of my walls and show the tiny details in the ADU.I really liked this concept but in the end I didn’t see it being the right concept for the competition.
Concept 02 |
In my 2nd Concept, I was researching a typical cottage and gathered different ideas to craft this concept. This concept honestly didn’t make it that far and I didn’t really like it so I didn’t come up with any ways it reflected my craft:Fabric Art.Even though this concept didn’t make it far I still liked my idea of a green roof and a sort of garden on top of the ADU.I also liked the circular windows for a lot of natural light inside of it.In the end there were a few good ideas but not enough to make an impact on my final concept.

CAN'T FIND WHERE THIS WENT I DOCUMENTED IT ON THURSDAY BUT IT DISAPPEARED WILL NEED TO DOCUMENT IT WHEN I HAVE TIME
|
When I first made my 3rd concept (my final project) I really didn't like it and it was just a sketch in my notebook, and it definitely has evolved from where it first started.Honestly my classmates were the ones who convinced me to turn it into a concept and if it wasn't for them it probably would've stayed in my sketchbook never used.Which is also the reason why i don't have a model before my final model, I had 5 concepts in total and decided to do a model on another one of my concepts that are not here, because I thought this was not going to go anywhere.
Autocad:Floor Plan, Elevation, and Site
Unfortunately, I did my elevations incorrectly so this is all I have for my elevations but, this communicates the front view of my ADU's final concept.
Presentation Board
This is my Final Presentation Board,I wanted to evenly show both my craft and my ADU in a well formatted and organized board.I showed where I got my roof idea from and the form of architecture I researched. I made sure to show my thought process and why I included most of the things in my board.I also included an extra idea of mine for the interior, where as the exterior was mostly monochromatic the inside would show that a Fabric Artist lived there with bright and vibrant interior elements.
Final Model
For my final model I used Museum Board to craft an effective and clearly planned model for my final presentation.I effectively crafted my floor plan inside the model to show the flow of the ADU.For my roof I used museum board and carefully cut lines to show the flow of my roof. With the use of wooden sticks I showed the windows that are in between the walls and the roof.Even though you can't see it there was supposed to be a waterfall on the far left wall in the front. From the front view on the right you can also see that I tried to implement sliding doors for the outdoor workspace experience to differ from the inside workspace with another set in the back.

Project 02:
Full Site
ADAPTING THE APPRENTICE COTTAGE

As I received criticism from the judges I started to realize just how absolutely huge my ADU was originally. So to shrink it I decided to remove the workspace that was on the side, and although that definitely down sized the ADU in numbers there was still many adjustments that needed to be made.Understanding this project better I realized that the apprentice did not need a mansion and only required the necessities to live (not exactly sure what I was thinking). I found the cottage to a have very boxy interior lay out as well, it was additionally not as practical so I went with more open spaces and less walls so it didn't feel like you were being squeezed. Finally, I modified the exterior waterfall wall because I found the layout quite boxy.
DEVELOPING THE WORKSHOP
Initial ConceptFrom the ADU I started to come up with possibilities for a separate combined workspace. This was the part of my project in which I started to develop a fairytale theme. Not only that but this was right after we did a sketch on Gaudi’s work I found his work quite fascinating. After thorough research I liked the idea of a spiral I saw in a building of his. To expand on this idea of this and the “flow of fabric” I brainstormed ways my roof could curve up and embody fabric shown on the top of the workshop.I thought the use of stained glass would be a good idea because it was previously recommended to me by a judge. But if I’m being honest looking back that’s the only thing I like about this concept, it all seemed to plain and not what I was going for.Rather, this idea expanded my thinking in developing my chosen idea instead of trying to work with this.
|
Concept Evolution
Taking what I learned from the previous concept I brainstormed “curving, falling fabric”.Of course I can also thank Mr. Carson for recommending the idea of making the workshop outdoors an idea that was sort of developed in my ADU.When I thought of outdoors I wanted to further develop a fairy like design and a connection to nature.Which can be seen in the top left corner on the butter paper to my side. While this was an okay idea I didn’t see how I could embody fabric in the idea.I did some research and found fascinating ideas and just built on from there, including multiple storage places for fabric and tools.I carried over the idea of 2 separate spaces for the master craftsmen and the apprentice and a combined workspace for collaboration.
|
Final Design
My final design is practically everything I just spoke about, but I want to emphasize some details now.For the folding petals I wanted to somehow show it as insulated and translucent.Additionally the petals fold in to an enclosed space when not in use for weather purposes. In conclusion, I wanted the workshop to be open emphasizing the connection to nature including the flower design.I wanted it to include a lot of storage for the craftsmen and convey fabric and fabric art.
|
SITE ANALYSIS
Here is when I started to expand on ways fabric can be used and shown in nature. As you can see I’m still hanging on to the fairy idea but unfortunately these ideas sort of went in the back of my mind.I wish I would’ve expanded more on the things to the left, they would’ve more clearly communicated the unity of nature in my presentation.Originally I came up with an idea of a stream flowing through the site by quickly disregarded it because I thought it was dumb.Instead I made a garden for not only connection of nature but sustainability for growing food and attracting animals.
|
MASTER CRAFTSMEN CONCEPTS
Concept 01 |
Similarly in my cottage I wanted to use water to connect to fabric. The idea in this building is a “growing ripple of water” thorough the front exterior. The circular window being the inside ripple and certain chosen components being the ripple of this window, all curving to the center. While I did like the idea of this I just didn't find it exciting enough to expand further. The workshop can bee seen in the top left corner with a huge window over looking the front.I also found this design kind of limiting.

Concept 02
Final Main House Production

For producing my final main house I used museum board to efficiently communicate all the important components in my ideas.Which include the main scheme; the roof. For the roof I had to cut a slit in it to be able to intersect with huge windows on the second floor.Additionally by carefully cutting lines on the other side of the roof I was able to manipulate it into curving the way I want it to.To effectively show the full idea of the balcony I added a grass like material. To show all the natural light that will be received I laser cutted big windows in mostly the front of the house.Lastly I engraved the floor plan for the interior in each floor to easily show where everything would go.

FINAL SITE PRODUCTION
For site production I wanted my models to look neat and well thought through so for each building I used museum board for a clean and contrasting look to other elements in the site. For the driveways and pathways I used fabric, while its not a huge design choice I think it minimally connects fabric to nature. Furthermore, I wanted to include a lot of trees because I didn’t clearly expand the fairy aspect of the site besides the garden of course. Not also to connect to nature but to be more sustainable and not cut down a lot of trees.
