Chloe Hammett: Architectural Design I
For my project I had to design a backyard cottage for the city of Lewisville! A backyard cottage is known to be an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), or as a tiny home in your backyard. We were given a craft and had to make a backyard cottage based off the craft we were given. The craft I got was a stained-glass artist! things that come with stained glass is putting different geometric shapes together to create something. Stained glass can also come across as kaleidoscopic, but stained glass is nothing without light or color.
Craft Investigation
When I first started investigating and trying to gather information, I was very confused and had no idea what to do. I just started to find random things rather than getting information that relates to my client, but once I started to get the hang of it, I understood it a lot more. An idea I had was to make a tiny Victorian style home because that's what I thought went best with stained glass, and the Victorian style home did have some traits that went with stained glass. But it wasn't really a style home you would see in the city of Lewisville, so I had to change it to something that would go more with my client's craft. I started to learn more about what I was supposed to do when I did some more research on stained glass then ideas started flowing.
Concept design
These are the 3 different ideas I had in mind for my concepts! On some of my concepts I definitely was not thinking or anything because some of them make absolutely no sense to match my client's craft. I really was just going with it hoping it would turn out but then I started to get a better understanding of what I was supposed to do. Then everything started completely changing when I started my third concept.
Concept 1:
So, this concept doesn't really have anything to do based off my client's craft. When making this I was in my own little la-la world not knowing what I'm doing at all!! It's basically just a regular normal one-story house, nothing special to it. Nothing stained glass related, and it doesn't really have a story to it.
Concept 2:
For this concept, I was basically just putting pieces together hoping it would come out looking somewhat pleasant. After I had finished putting the pieces together, I flipped the model around different ways to see how I would like it, and I just came to the point that the original one I had made was the best one. This one also doesn't really have a story for it, it doesn't really relate to stain glass either.
Concept 3:
This concept was the best one and the one that inspired me the most to keep going with it!! This one I created relates to my client's craft and has many features that go with it as well. Looking through the house from a specific angle, it looks kaleidoscopic, the different shapes of the walls and how they're layered showing off that feature. It also has different geometric shapes put together just like stained glass does!

Schematic Design
Out of the 3 concepts I chose the third one! I chose the third one because it made the most sense to me, there were specific characteristics that were with that model that made me pick that one over the others. This model has many geometric features to it, such as the windows, and the different pieces that were put together to create the model. Which is why it relates to stained glass! Stained glass is basically different geometric shapes put together to create something, it can also be seen as kaleidoscopic from looking at it a specific way. So looking at the model from the side view it creates a kaleidoscopic view, considering that the walls are different shapes and sizes so it gives off that effect. Stained glass is nothing without light, meaning that this model has to have lots of windows to provide natural light, natural light is needed to make the stained glass look prettier.
Final Design
For my final design, it reflects my concept 3 but a little less. This model also has some geometric features with it, the different shaped windows, and the different shapes to create the model. This model is not as fun looking as the other one, some of the same features were kept but not all of them. The different sloped roofs don't really have anything to do with the stained-glass craft but, majority of the house represents stained glass. Some inspiration was from the Rietveld Schroder House made by Gerrit Schroder; it has different geometric shapes that are layered and has different pieces sticking out. The main pieces of design are the different geometric features in the model, all of the windows are geometric shapes used to represent the craft. Overall, I wish I had stuck with my gut and kept the original features I had made with the house considering it looks so much better than this model I created. If I got a chance to redo this model I would do it like my first one I had made 100%.
Project 2!
For this project we had to design a residence for a guest craftsman, on or near the Old Alton Bridge. The craftsmen's guest house had to be made in relation to the existing historic bridge. Old Alton Bridge also known as "Goatman's Bridge" is known a historic bridge connecting the Texas cities of Denton and Copper Canyon. The guest craftsman is invited to live at a local craft guild for an extended stay. The client will also be able to participate in craft activities with other residents on the site and interact with the community participating in activities
Concept Design
These are three different concept designs I had in mind. All of the concepts have a Victorian style to it, they have open floorplans, and they all have porches.
Concept 1:
This concept was the first idea, it’s more of a wood type of house. Considering the bridge is surrounded by trees it will be better if the craftsman specialized in woodcarving. The house itself has a unique shape to it, it has 2 porches on it, and has a very open floor plan making it easier for the guests. The comparison it has with the bridge is definitely the wood, there was a wood path on the bridge for walking.
Concept 2:
This concept was more getting into it. The bridge was created in the 1880’s and the style of homes that were popular back then were Victorian style homes. It has a bay window tower which is iconic in a Victorian style home, and it has a gabled roof. It also has 2 floors with plenty of floor plan room, it has 2 bedrooms with 2 workspaces.
Concept 3:
This is also somewhat a Victorian style home with the bay window shape, but as the entrance rather than just windows. Its a single floor, with only one bed and one bath.
Schematic Design
The idea for this concept was to make a Victorian style home. The bridge was built in the 1880’s, and since we had to create a home that incorporated part of the bridge in it. I made a Victorian style home because that was the type of homes that were popular in the 1880’s. The home on the exterior has a bunch of wood carving details, which was the craftsmen craft I was going for. All along the porch has a lot of wood carving designs to make it look nicer. The bridge is also surrounded by lots of trees which would be perfect for a woodcarver's craft. I also didn't have time to make this but from the back porch I was going to extend that out further into a smaller little area used as the workshop, for all the different craftsmen guest that come to the home.
Final Design
This was the final outcome, were not any of the concept ideas that were made. This is more of a basic home, as you can see from the schematic design it has a bunch of wood carving and cutting features that weren't shown on the model. This is a 2 story home with 2 bedrooms and 3 bath, it has a very open floor plan from when you first walk in. There’s 2 porches, one in the front, and one long one in the back that leads to the workspace! The workspace is disconnected from the main home because it would give the guest or client more privacy rather than being in the home, they have their own little designated private area to do what they love. There’s also a bathroom in there so it would be easier than having to go all the way back to the min house to use the bathroom, it’s just more convenient.
