Work In the Studio - Bradock Sewell
This semester in architecture, we've been working on two main, large projects. The first was designing a bird house for a particular bird near the Old Alton Bridge area. Our second project was building a house on the Old Alton Bridge for the dean of a college.
Bird House Design Project
Client Poster
In order to get started on our project, the very first thing we had to do was come up with a Client Poster, so we can understand what our client needs, and how those needs should affect our design. For Instance, the client I received was the Northern Cardinal, and one of the unique behaviors of the Northern Cardinal are that they like to sing. As such, the design should accommodate for that, and a singing perch may be added to the design of the bird house. |

Final Design
Here is the final design I ended up choosing. It features an elevator for easy travel, as the Northern Cardinal doesn't fly much, singing perches, and bird baths and feeders on the inside.

Parti
This is the parti diagram constructed for the bird house. This displays the first and second floors, the elevator connecting the two, and how the bird may move around the site.
Old Alton Bridge Design Project

Client Poster
Just like with the first project, we needed to create a client poster to better understand the needs and wants of our client. This poster mostly just displays what the client likes to do, mainly focusing on outdoor activities, but also including information such as how she is married, and her husband works at the nearby Guyer High School.

Final Poster
Here is the final poster constructed for this project, displaying lots of different kinds of information.
Parti -
At the top left is the parti diagram for this project. Here, you can see how the house may be placed on the bridge as well as any elevation changes in the design.
Site Plan -
At the bottom left is the site plan for this project, where you can see exactly how the house will be put onto the Old Alton Bridge and how it relates to the surrounding environment, as well as where the bird house from the first project would be located on the site.
Elevations -
At the top right is the elevations, displaying how the design can be seen from different angles. You may notice a large usage of glass, which lines up with my client, as she works in glass working, particularly stained glass. You can also see how the structure relates to an individual utilizing the site.
Floor Plan -
At the bottom right is the floor plans, featuring the first and second floors. Here, you can see how the interior design of the house was put together. Fitting all these rooms into a tight space was a bit of a challenge, and I ultimately had to make the design a bit bigger to accommodate for that. However, I believe this project ended up turning out exactly how I wanted it to.

Final Model
Here is the final model, as it would look on the bridge. Inside the model, you can see the floor plans. The first and second floors can also separate, making access to the inside of the model easy. The triangular outlines seen are the windows, besides the one on the far right. That area acts as an entrance into the house, with square holes made within the design. The larger triangle towards the top of the building represents the attic of this model.

Conclusion
Our work in the architecture studio has proven to be extensive and difficult at times, but also a place where our creativity can take over, fueling each of our projects. The architectural program has taught me many things I did not expect to learn, nor did I know I needed to learn, but I'm very glad I took this course. It's proven to be a fun challenge, and I believe everyone would benefit from taking this class.
