CULINARY ARTS: BACKYARD COTTAGE DESIGN

Exploration of CRAEFT: |
MACKAY LYONS use of CRAEFT:At first glance, the backyard/site is very small. Due to this, adding unnecessary rooms and taking up needed space isn't good.
To work around this, the floor plan should not include many walls and should have room to move or, well, dwell inside it. Figuring out the floor plan first is a good first step. |
Once the floor plans had been drawn up, take the strong designs and translate them into exterior designs. Add windows and adjust if the designs aren't working. These are the first two designs, very solid but they do not have a good charm or any standout features. It looks very plain and not something that represents Culinary Arts industrial side.
This is the final floor plan and exterior design. This concept represents the more industrial side of Culinary Arts, like the stainless steel and new kitchen appliances. The floor plan is very open and not too restricted, the space is being utilized effectively and efficiently. Another main focus the design had was how to tie in uses for the house, like a play on Craeft. Craeft had changed over time, from medieval to modern. The concept mainly shows modern, so adding a garden to grow fruits and vegetables was a good touch. |
These are the final models. These were taken to show the lighting and the outside of the space and the placement of doors and windows. The model was made through AUTOCAD and the laser cutter machine for more precise cuts and lengths. This was made in 1/8" scale to match the site plan, that is also in 1/8" scale.
This is the Presentation Board for this backyard cottage. The use of the dark blue design is to make the poster seem flowy, like water, and the "arrow" like features are to direct you and also for a pop of color.
There are pieces of Culinary Artwork displayed, it's always important to show things like this so the viewer knows what you are talking about. The Materials are also shown: stainless steel and dark wood. The building should have the inside as wood and the outside as steel. |

Project02: Master Craftsman's House and Full Site
To begin the second project, the first project needed some adjustments to the floor plan and exterior design. Using the criticism at hand, the project design was easily changed to fit the concept and purpose better. This is to better help the production of the master apprentices house so both of them look complete and not one looks better than the others.

Moving onto the Master Craftsman's house, many different designs were placed down on the paper. The idea behind the house was free movement and ability to get to places easily. Flow in the floor plan is crucial to the client's house. Exterior design is also important this time. Floor plan and exterior planning was going on at the same time, hence the schematic designs also having floor plans. The them and concept is food, the ingredients in culinary arts. |
After the rough size of the master house was decided, the site plan was created.
The ability of movement should also be reflected in the site, how the two houses connect with each other. Another idea was to add a pavilion to the design, but three kitchen's seemed too much. The main workspace would be the garden, where the Master and the Apprentice can work together and collect ingredients for their meals. The two client's can also share some recipe's or advice on different food flavors and tastes. This is just a rough estimate of where everything will go. |
After the completion of the schematic designs, one design had to be chosen and finalized. The design chosen was the domed house that was inspired after the shape of caviar. There were some problems in the floor plan and design, so fixing it in the rough finalization of the plan is ideal.
The main room of the house will be the kitchen, just like the apprentice house, so designs of the kitchen were drawn up roughly. there will be lots of storage to pull down and utilize the space around the kitchen. There will also be seating around the kitchen, a bar or maybe an open dining area connecting to the kitchen. These plans were put into Revit and then made into a model to show/represent the completed design. The top is the apprentice house and the bottom is the Master's. |
